Dear friends,
(to those who might not know about Cycling4Gaza and my participation in it, please read following, and visit cycling4gaza.com)

Today is the 21st of October, and so you might think that I am writing this email from Olympia before i head out to our first day of our three day, 350km cycle. Plans changed. At the beginning of this week, Cycling4Gaza and the Welfare Association had to make the very difficult decision of postponing the cycle due to the worsening of the crisis in Greece. As you may well know, the whole country has been undergoing strikes on many levels including transport and closure of tourist sites and shops. This left us with no option but to cancel our Greece trip this weekend.

However this is not stopping us. We are determined to do our cycling challenge before the year closes, and we have reorganised ourselves to cycle the full 350km across Jordan this coming December instead. We are very excited to be taking our initiative to the Middle East, especially because this new route will take us to the Dead Sea on a road that is parallel to the border with Palestine.

We are working hard to put the final plans in place, and are continuing to train up and work towards our fundraising target of £200,000. The funds raised are going to the same three Welfare projects that are focused on providing rehabilitation and educational support to mentally and physically disabled children in Gaza, including efforts to integrate them in their societies through community awareness efforts. We have so far raised over £70,000 (details on JustGiving page)- this secures a good portion of what is needed for two projects, we hope to complete that and by the time we are cycling in Jordan, we hope to have covered the third project, the National Society for Rehabilitation. Through securing funding for the three projects, we will be able to provide rehabilitation, integration, psychosocial and educational support to 1,080 child in Gaza who suffer from mental and/or physical disabilities.

For those of you who have supported us to date, I thank you on behalf of the 41 cyclists with whom i was meant to be today in Greece, and for those who may have interest in supporting this effort, through direct donation or simply spreading the word, your support will be put to good use.

If you would like to make a donation to help us ensure we cover this third project, please visit our JustGiving page.

We now have under 7 weeks to go until the Jordan cycle and will have plenty to report until then, so make sure you keep up to date with our progress by following us on Facebook and Twitter.

I leave you with a collage of the highlights of my training for the cycle, since september, in Beirut and in Dubai. If anything, this has given me a taste of the two cities that I was far from getting on foot or by car. also attached is a brief about the three projects we are supporting.

I thank you all for your ongoing support which remains invaluable to this initiative, happening for the third year since the 2008 attacks/war on Gaza.

All the best,

Joumana & the Cycling4Gaza team
